Sinjin Smith Volleyball Academy
The Sinjin Smith Volleyball Academy will feature top level programs for indoor and beach volleyball, under the direct supervision of Sinjin Smith and Technical Director, Gary Sato.
Each athlete in the Academy receives:
- Unlimited membership access to HAX during the competitive season, including weight room, strength training, core fitness, Speedburners Academy speed and agility training (other programs available at extra cost if desired).
- Uniform (practice and competition uniforms and related equipment).
- Access to private coaching and instruction (additional cost).
- Video and statistical data evaluation.
- International training and competition opportunities.
HAX Volleyball Club Boys Tryouts
Sunday, September 14, 2008
- 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon (14-and-under)
- 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. (16-and-under)
- 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (18-and-under)
- Make up dates will be available the week of September 15.
- All practices and training sessions will be held exclusively at HAX.
- Cost: $20.00 per player (*Requires advance or on-site registration.) Please download the required USA Volleyball waiver and bring the completed form(s) with you to the tryout.

Indoor Club Program

Club teams will be offered in the 12-18 single age divisions for boys and girls.
Practice Schedule:
Club teams will practice Monday through Friday between 2:00 – 9:00 p.m. and on select weekends during the season (exact practice schedules will be published for individual teams, including confirmed competition dates).
Information and Costs:
- Youth tryouts are Septermber 13 & 14.
- Boys’ program tuition starts at $2,800,* girls’ program tuition starts at $3,500.* (Full season cost.)
- Includes unlimited HAX membership.
*Costs do not include additional expenses for travel/transportation or accommodation to national tournaments as determined on a team-by-team basis. Fundraising opportunities are available. Financial aid is available upon request.

Indoor Academy Program

The Sinjin Smith Volleyball Academy teams will compete in local competitions in the Southern California area, including HAX-sponsored events. Academy teams will be offered starting with the 10-and-under age division and will include special classes for boys and girls as young as 5 years old. Athletes will be organized according to gender, age and skill level. Adult teams will be offered in preparation for U.S. Open National Championships and other international competitions. For the first time, Japanese Lawson Cup women’s 9-person volleyball will be offered in preparation for the Lawson Cup Volleyball Championships held in Japan and the Lawson Cup USA exhibitions held in Hawaii and California.
Practice Schedule:

- Adult teams will train in a 16-week program (including competition dates) leading to the U.S. Open National Championships.
- Lawson Cup teams will train in an 8-week program (including competition dates).

- Girls’ programs start November 2008. Tuition starts at $2,000.*
- Adult club rosters are due by January. Cost for adult teams is $800 per athlete.*
- Lawson Cup rosters are due by March. Cost for team is $600 per athlete.*

Beach Volleyball Programs

Academy Sessions:
- Winter Session: Starting December 2008 - February
- Spring Session: March through May
- Summer Session: June through August
- Fall Session: September through November
High Performance Program:
- May through July, including junior beach competitions in California and Florida.
- Athletes will be assigned according to gender, USA Volleyball age definitions, and skill level.
- Coaches are assigned to each age group division.
International Training Program:
- June through August, including FIVB junior and youth competitions.
- Athletes will be assigned according to gender, FIVB age definitions, and skill level.
- Coaches are assigned to each age group division.
- Team delegates are assigned to teams traveling to the SWATCH FIVB Youth and Junior World Championships.
*All training sessions will take place at the HAX beach volleyball courts, built to the exact specifications of the FIVB and AVP pro tours and featuring sand mixed exclusively for the Sinjin Smith Volleyball Academy by Hutcheson Sand & Mixes of Toronto, Canada.

Academy Director and Founder
Considered one of the greatest legends in the sport of volleyball, Sinjin Smith is an Olympian, 5-time World Champion, 7-time U.S. Champion, and the original “King of the Beach.” As the President of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Council, Sinjin has directed the development of beach volleyball into one of the most popular Olympic sports played by over a billion people in 220 countries around the world. Sinjin was the first man to reach the million dollar mark in career prize earnings, and with 139 career wins is considered one of the all time leaders in the sport. He is the co-founder of the Sinjin Smith & Randy Stoklos Beach Volleyball Camps, and CEO of Sinjin, LLC, a special events company that promotes grassroots beach volleyball events throughout the U.S.
Gary Sato, D.C.
Technical Director
As a member of volleyball’s “First Family,” Dr. Gary Sato will share his technical expertise and years of competitive experience in the sport. Gary was an Assistant Coach with the U.S. Men’s Olympic Team in 1988 (gold medal) and 1992 (bronze medal), and most recently on the men’s volleyball coaching staff of 2008 NCAA runner-up Pepperdine University. He started his coaching career in 1979 as Head Coach of the Pepperdine University women’s volleyball team. Since that time, he has also been on staff with several of the top Junior Olympic clubs in Southern California. In addition to providing coaching expertise, Gary will be involved in the Sports Medicine and Chiropractic care program for the Sinjin Smith Volleyball Academy.
Lori Okimura
Managing Director
President/CEO, Creative Sports Strategies
With experience in both beach and indoor volleyball executive management in the U.S. and around the world, Lori Okimura will oversee the daily operations and future development of the Sinjin Smith Volleyball Academy, including the exclusive partnership with Japan-based ACP, and the Supplier’s Club of top volleyball companies in the nation that have signed on to support the Academy. Lori is the President/CEO of Creative Sports Strategies and an FIVB Technical Supervisor for the SWATCH FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour.
